Hi... i'm not yet a MAX user, but am trying to figure out what tools to use to put together a multichannel mixing enviroment with the cabability of mixing for 8 to 16 channels of delivery (ie:8-16 individual speakers). I am wondering if MAX would be a useful and/or necessary part of the equation. And if anyone is using it for this sort of thing. Thanks.

Re: MAX as a multichannel mixing enviroment?
Tue, October 12, 2004 - 10:02 AMyes indeed. a friend of mine build a fantastic 16 channel spatialization control system in max. definitely involves a time commitment - but this is a superb environment to build such a system. are you familiar with 'the compound' or 'surround traffic control' ? this is the studio (in SF) run by naut humon/asphodel records where this madness goes down. there are occasionally shows at the space which you should check out to get tuned into what they are doing in this realm.

You need just a compatible multichannell soundcard -

Sat, April 30, 2005 - 7:03 AMCan anyone tell me what the options are for a multichannel output / soundcard to connect to a mac (usb / firewire) and use with Max? Is there anything not obscenely expensive, or kits or instructions on how to build such a thing? -

Re: MAX as a multichannel mixing enviroment?
Mon, May 2, 2005 - 2:09 AMcheapest and most tested @ cycling 74 is the sundblaster... I dunno for usb firewire.. that will possibly rise the price.
And you must be shure that max recognizes the card.
Just for newbies I must also say that vbap is the object you must use in order to work with correct pan laws.
What I mean?
Spatialization is not just plugging several speakers to same numebr of audio busses.. it involves pan laws and a lot of math to calculate correct spatialization with 16 speakers.
So vbap is the one you need. You just say to vbap how many speakers you have and their position in degrees. (elevation and azimuth)
