Seeking an inexpensive Max/MSP license....

My strategy is to look for a bargain basement, perhaps older version of Max/MSP I can buy cheaply and upgrade to the latest version. I am a student and cannot afford the $450.00 for a full current version.

Any Tribespeople have a spare license they aren't using? (perchance?)

  • can you scrape up $250.00 plus california tax? that's the educational price for Max/MSP. check out this link:

    www.cycling74.com/products/discount.html

this does not include jitter, mind you.

other than that there are older pirated versions of the product floating around the web on BBS sites, but none of these will run on OS 10.

that being said, i don't think you would regret having bought the software. the company is not large and they will always give you response codes to challenge codes should you change your machine, or install it on a different machine (they usually allow two challenge responses). while i might copy other larger software, i avoid this w/ Max/MSP, because they are really cool and kinda small, so it hurts their bottom line more.

if you absolutely must have a free or nearly free copy of something, try the program Supercollider by James McCartney. it also does DSP and is actually more efficient than Max/MSP at this, but is based on Smalltalk and is more programming intensive than Max/MSP. since he got a job at apple he opened up the source code and distributed the product free of charge. there's already an OS X port of it available:

    supercollider.sourceforge.net/

    hope this helps!

      Thanks Scott.

I knew about the discount but was thinking more like $50 than $250. My economic prospects are pretty minimal, I guess dismal is a better term! But, there's still hope to get a licens from someone who doesn't use it even though I realize that most people who have said license probably DO use it.

      One can still hope though!

I wish you the best of luck, but if you're really interested I think you need to re-strategize. Finding a copy of Max/MSP for $50 is going to be extremely tricky - most professional tools like this aren't going to sell for 1/8th of what the market will bear unless you find someone braindead.

Thanks Bryan for your input. I have been czeching out JMAX and PD as a re-strategization. No braindeaders out there so you were right, no software for below market price. Oh well, it never hurts to ask!

allright dc, if you've got a mac w/ os 10.2 or 10.3, try a port of PD by miller puckette. MSP is largely based on PD (as in, it's graphic objects hooked up w/ pipe cords and i've heard there's an os x port which seems to be stable. now to find the link...

(rummage rummage... ah, here it is)

        crca.ucsd.edu/~msp/software.html
download the 0.37 version for OS X

and you can check out the documentation here:
        crca.ucsd.edu/~msp/Pd_doc...on/index.htm

that's the best i can give you. good luck...

          Scott,

I have the PD version installed and it is working great. It's not as well documented as MAX/MSP but it seems to do many of the core functions just fine for me, in particular produce tweaked out audio for performances.

Thanks for the link and for your input. I appreciate it very much.

          Peace,

            a bit late here...
but i noticed the other day when looking for the same thing they now have a 9 month license for students of jit/max/msp for 80 bucks i think and you can then put that money towards a new license.
